Running In The Dark
I was only 10 but can still recall the moment someone switched off the lights mid-game. I remember the panic and disorientation before the sudden crash and surge of pain.
There are very good reasons for not running in the dark! Yet many of us are doing exactly that every single day. We try to move at full speed with the lights off, then wonder why we’re in pain!
Turn The Lights On
Imagine your nervous system as the lighting system in your home. When the lights go dark, our vision gets fuzzy and even simple functions, like walking from one side of a furniture-filled room to the other, can become difficult or even painful.
As a Pediatric Doctor of Chiropractic, I’ve spent years studying the root cause of colic, irritability, breastfeeding complications, poor sleep, developmental delays, digestion issues, asthma, behavioral problems, low energy, inability to concentrate, headaches, and every other common symptom imaginable.
Here’s what I’ve found…
Every complication our kids commonly face comes back to one thing—nervous system performance, which determines the body’s ability to self-regulate and function at a peak level. Many kids are moving through life with the “lights out” due to nerve irritations from misalignment of the vertebra as a result of daily life’s stressors.
Consider this…
Kids are constantly dealing with posture issues, hard falls, poor diet, toxin exposure, and stress. Even the healthiest child experiences irritations and misalignment due to engaging play and discovery. And in the earliest stages of childhood development, awkward positioning in the uterus and the trauma of childbirth also need to be taken into account.
Bottom line, every child faces unavoidable challenges directly related to nervous system function.
Lights On
For over 6 years, I’ve witnessed dramatic changes in thousands of children’s lives through pediatric chiropractic care! I’ve seen strengthened immune systems irradicate the chronic colds and ear infections that once kept families in social isolation. I’ve witnessed the joy on a mother’s face as colic and Irritable Baby Syndrome become things of the past. I’ve watched once-inactive children running and playing, no longer held back by asthma and allergies. Digestion issues have been cured. Sleep has improved. Behavioral disorders have been overcome.
But let’s look at 3 of the specific ways that pediatric chiropractic care can improve your child’s health and wellbeing…
3 Ways Pediatric Chiropractic Care Improves Childhood Wellbeing
1. Immune System Support
Chiropractic care is not a treatment for any disease. Rather, chiropractic care reduces interference to the nervous system and, thus, unleashes the body’s ability to heal. So how is the immune system’s function improved? Since the nervous system commands the immune system and chiropractic care improves the function of the nervous system, the immune system is the direct beneficiary of chiropractic care! Have any doubts? Just ask any of our families enrolled in our “chiropractic co-op” how many days of school their kids have missed in the past year!
2. Brain Development
The nervous system controls a child’s growth, development, and their ability to process information coming in through their senses. Here’s how it works… The majority of the brain’s right side, controlling the emotions, processing, and moral sensitivities, develops within the first 3 years of a child’s life. The left side, controlling reason, problem-solving, and language, then develops by leaps and bounds over the next 3 years. As the brain develops, so is the rest of the body in direct and complex connection to the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system). Because the brain and spine are so interconnected, a misaligned spine will begin to weaken the body’s communication with the brain, causing developmental delays in the brain and other important functions. So how does pediatric chiropractic care improve brain development? Simply put, gentle adjustments of a child’s spine can correct misalignments and, thus, improve nervous system function and brain communication which results in brain development, learning, growth, and overall health!
3. Childhood Behavioral Issues
Children experience many health concerns that affect their behavior, from poor sleep habits to slower physical development, or other conditions like ADD or ADHD. One stunning statistic, according to the CDC, is that nearly 11% of all children from the ages of 4 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD! But what solution has become common in these situations? Medications (or shall we say overmedication). And if you have concerns about your child developing a dependency on medications that carry into adulthood addiction, you are not alone! If you’re anything like me, (and I think you are), you want to raise a healthy child that grows into a healthy adult! So how can pediatric chiropractic care make a positive impact on childhood behavioral issues? Once again, it all comes back to the nervous system. ADHD and learning disabilities are either alleviated or perpetuated based on the brain and spinal cord working together to ensure the body functions optimally. And when the spine is misaligned, the resulting nerve interference disrupts the necessary communication, causing increased behavior issues such as inattention, poor impulse control, lack of good sleep, moodiness, or even aggressiveness.
The Verdict Is In
Are you beginning to see a common denominator here? Regular gentle adjustments that restore the spine’s alignment and remove nervous system interference can have an enormously positive effect on a child’s behavior! But don’t just take our word for it… In a study approved by the Institutional Review Board of Life University, 87% of chiropractic patients reported their care was effective to very effective and 95% said they were highly satisfied with their results.
What’s Holding Families Back (Obstacles to Childhood Care)
I don’t think you need any more convincing, do you? The benefits of pediatric chiropractic care are undeniable and our clinic’s testimonials are indisputable! And yet I still meet families who feel like this type of care for their family is out of reach for them. So what’s holding families back?
Here are the top 4 reasons we often hear from people who are interested yet hesitant:
1. Relationship
Families want to know their doctor and to be known by their doctor. They don’t want to feel like a “number” in a database or a task on a checklist. In fact, according to a recent Oliver Wyman survey, 59 percent of Americans reported their healthcare satisfaction was based more on their doctor-patient relationship than on anything else!
2. Quality
Parents also want to feel confident that the pediatric care their child receives takes their unique needs into consideration—that they won’t be pigeonholed, misdiagnosed, and prescribed medications with side effects that make life even more complicated. Yet Americans just aren’t satisfied! According to a 2019 Gallup Poll, 49 percent were dissatisfied with the “quality of medical care” available from their doctor and/or medical institutions. Simply put, many Americans are not finding the quality of care and consideration of needs that their family deserves.
3. Scheduling
Families also struggle with incompatibilities between personal schedules and appointment availability. Many parents are unable to receive care themselves either because they work from 9-5 during normal clinic hours or because they’re hour workers with unstable or unpredictable work schedules. These scheduling conflicts impact both the working parents and their children, reducing the health care options to after-hours clinics or even the ER.
4. Affordability
Parents are also very concerned about being able to sustainably afford health care costs in today’s society. But don’t just take my word for it… A recent Gallup Poll found 67% of participants were “very dissatisfied” or “somewhat dissatisfied” with the “availability of affordable health care.” 1 in 4 Americans now report the cost of healthcare is the biggest concern facing their family, and 1 in 3 say they could not access healthcare at all due to cost.
Mission-Driven Dissatisfaction
So here’s what all the above translates to in our clinic and our Murrieta community… I’ve spent 6 years helping my patients (both parents and children) get to the root cause of health issues like autism, constipation, migraines, and helping babies stay in optimal positions for birth while avoiding c-sections. And while that’s an incredibly fulfilling experience, my heart is saying something is missing. I’m determined to fill that gap—to figure out the missing piece. Here’s what I’m seeing… I see parents bringing in their neuro-challenged kids while sacrificing their own care. I see postpartum moms focusing on their babies but not setting appointments for themselves. I see working spouses unable to attend their own appointments due to work conflicts. I see the family’s “stronger” children going without health maximizing treatments because their younger or weaker sibling needs more urgent attention.
Here’s the conclusion I’ve drawn…
We can’t sit back and watch this continue—not when it’s in our power to make a change!
Being a private pay practice, (operating outside of insurance), we’ve had the freedom to provide the best-possible results-focused care. But in my zeal and passion to attain those results, I overlooked the importance of making sure every member of the family has the opportunity to heal and thrive. I also underestimated the importance of whole-family health being a key to speeding up results among more at-risk family members. Furthermore, the societal strain over the past couple of years—the cultural polarization and community division—have exacerbated health problems in every dimension, which means it’s now taking longer for patients to see positive results than ever before. People simply must have community, good healthcare, and truth, and God forbid our prices and availability get in the way of that!
Making Drastic Changes
So I’m making some big changes here at Trailhead Family Chiropractic with our community’s families in mind! We’re doing away with pay-per-visits and expensive care plans and we’re moving to a membership model that makes it easy and affordable for the entire family. It’s so simple… From now on, $149/month covers an individual and $249/month covers an entire family for as much care as the doctor recommends! What’s more, our New Patient Exam price is dropping from $149 to only $49, without sacrificing any of the care and attention that our community’s come to know us for! We’re also trying to help family members with tough work schedules in two ways:
- 1 – Trailhead Members don’t need to make an appointment. They can walk in whenever’s most convenient for them!
- 2 – We’re staying open on “lunch breaks” and stretching our hours from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Finally, we’re adding microcurrent neurofeedback technology as a supplement to chiropractic care for those that want to accelerate healing or have severe symptoms that can be used to get optimal results. The Microcurrent Neurofeedback service will be offered at the lowest price in any office we’ve seen, just $100 for non-members and $75 for current Trailhead members. Now I’ll be the first to admit, these unlimited services at these member prices wouldn’t keep the lights on at a traditional chiropractic clinic… But we’re breaking the typical “clinic” mold and replacing it with a community model. You could even call it “co-op chiropractic!” This means that with enough participation, everyone thrives!
